There are dozens of magazines supporting and chronicling the worldwide graffiti movement. Some of them don't even have any writing in. What a fucking barrel of laughs they are. We thought we'd do our bit by essaying the true street artists, the kids taking risks with their lives to reveal their innermost thoughts and secrets. The kids with markers trying to make their mark. Oh, who are we trying to kid? We're ripping the piss, as usual.

'Bastard' by Arse2 of TITS CRU. - This coherent work is almost a technicolour belch, it's colours sporadic and yet organised. The artist has broken with convention by using mostly lower case lettering but, daringly and symbolically, has chosen to put the second 'A" in upper-case. This is saying "up yours, establishment, I reject your colonialist conventions of type. Death to QWERTY." The use of the word 'bastard' places the artist as an outsider in society.

'Portrait of Foster as a puff' by Trip, Nip and Doo-Dah-Dip of the Wellington Bombers. - This meisterwork poses the question - who is Foster? Is it the ex-Olympic runner Brendan Foster? Folk giants Foster & Allen? Actress Jodie Foster? A Foster Parent? We might never know, unless we ask. Whatever, the piece makes clear that 'Foster is a fucking gay bender', it's daring, formal experiment rendered all the more weighty by the list of names undersigning it. One for the hall of fame.

'Neil Shaw - Wildstyle on brick' by KM of Beeston Cru - A heartwarming homage to a lost master of the art, Neil Shaw is clearly a local hero on the Beeston graffiti scene, perhaps cut down in his prime by bitch-ass po-po or victim of a clip round the ear from a neighbourhood bobby. The full text - 'Neil Shaw is fucking fit by KM ov Beeston' - is enough to send tears to the eyes, a majestic use of the art-form, if rather obviously derived from Futura 2000.

'Speed Dobber' by Take2, BBC2 and 2 in a room of the 2Cru - Already a South Bronx landmark, this is the heart and soul of hip-hop. The speed dobber is a well known conceit in graffiti. When your classmate's back is turned in school you quickly draw a cock on his textbook. Extra marks are awarded if you sketch in the pubes, make the dobber spurt and etch some breasts as recipients of said load. The use of the dobber adjacent to a male mouth means this is most likely meant as an insult, although we showed the text - 'Ras Chipp, only the best' - to the Graf egg-heads at Graphotism Magazine and they didn't have a clue what it meant either.
